President Muhammadu Buhari Biography –
Muhammadu Buhari is an indigene of Dura, a Fulani town located in Katsina State, Nigeria. He was born on the 17th of December, 1942. He is the twenty-third(23rd) child of his father, Adamu. His mother Zulaihat raised him after the death of his father when was about four(4) years old.

Education

He attended primary school in Daura and Mai’adua before going to Katsina Model School in 1953 and from 1956 to 1961, he went to Katsina Provincial Secondary School( now Government College Katsina).

Military Career

In 1962, Buhari joined the army and became governor of the North-Eastern State during the rule of Gen. Murtala Mohammed.
During the military rule of Olusegun Obasanjo in 1976, he was later appointed the Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources.
Muhammadu Buhari was made the head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 1977 when it was created.
The government of the civilian President Shehu Shagari was dismissed in a coup d’état on 31st December 1983 and Major-General Buhari was chosen by the high ranking military to guide the country.

Muhammadu Buhari is known to be upright and has no tolerance for corruption. He, alongside his deputy Tunde Idiagbon introduced a campaign against indiscipline called “War Against Indiscipline” (WAI).

Electoral Contest

As a candidate of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Gen. Buhari contested the Presidential election in 2003 and lost to Olusegun Obasanjo, a nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In 2007, he contested against Umaru Musa Yar’adua of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and lost.
In April 2011, Gen. Buhari was a CPC Presidential candidate running against former President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu of Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN), And Ibrahim Shekarau of ANPP and again he lost.

In 2015, Muhammadu Buhari contested for the Presidential election under All Progressive Congress(APC) with Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party and came forth as the winner and was announced the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 
Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected for a second four-year term in 2019. The 76-year-old defeated his main rival, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, with a margin of nearly four million votes.
Mr. Abubakar’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the result. Turnout was a record low at just 35.6%.

Married Life

Buhari married his first wife Safinatu Buhari (nee Yusuf) in 1971. They had five children; Zulaihat(Zulai) named after Buhari’s mother, Fatima, Musa(deceased), Hadiza, and Safina.

Buhari divorced his first wife Safinatu in 1988. In 2006, she died of diabetes. Buhari married his second and present wife Aisha Buhari (nee Halilu).
They also have five children, a boy and four girls named Yusuf, Aisha, Halima, Zarah, and Amina. Yusuf and Zarah are graduates of the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. Halima was recently called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister.
