JUST IN: EFCC fails to bring Emefiele to court

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor was not brought to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Monday after the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) Commission defied a court order to either release him on bail or produce him for the hearing of the motion on bail.

The former CBN governor did not appear in court on Monday. His lawyer, Mathew burkaa, alleged that the EFCC violated the court order.

Today is the 149th day the Applicant has been in custody,” he said. “They have defied both orders.”

The Third and Fourth Respondents are still in custody of the Applicant, as of this writing.

In his reply, the counsel for the EFCC (Farouk Abdullahi) stated that the order had been served on the Commission, but denied that the ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had been in its custody for more than 100 days.

He further stated that the failure to comply with the order was not intentional.

He also noted that some of the exhibits cited by the applicant, in particular exhibit E, had not been attached to the order in question.

The judge, Olusegun Adeyemo, stayed the proceedings until November 8 and ordered the EFCC to either unconditionally release Mr Emefiele or produce him in court the following adjourned date to enable him to be granted bail.
